( Print out Done) MARICH-SAMBAD : Sipra Roy
Some events leave behind deep impression in mind . I saw a drama titled "Marich-Sambad" long ago in Durgapur, may be at least 30 /35 years back. Marich was a significant mythological character of the great Hindu epic Ramayana .This drama was presented by a famous intellectual rising troupe named "Nandikar" troupe.
Before watching it I was curious to think why this troupe had chosen a mythological character which is full of absurdity! What valuable message could it serve to the audience or society?
Anyway, I was interested to watch it as I knew intimately the pioneer of this troupe from my college days .
.'Marich' is an important character of the epic; but his presence in the epic is very short and brief.
....If Marich was not there, Sita wouldn't been kidnapped ;if Sita wouldn't been kidnapped , no battle would have happened between Rama and Ravana; if the battle wouldn't been occurred then the great epic of Ramayana wouldn't been ever materialized !....So You can guess the speciality of this character!
'Marich' was endowed with supernatural power of bewitchery. He utilized it according to interest, according to situation. By applying this magical power he changed his form into a golden deer and began to roam in front of Sita's cottage in the forest during the period of their banishment . Sita was allured to own that attractive deer and told her wish to Rama. Though Rama was not willing at all to chase after the deer ,still he agreed to please Sita. Before going he kept his younger brother Laksmana. to guard and. take care of Sita.
No. sooner Rama. left, imitating Rama's voice Marich started crying ,"o, save me, save me please!" Sita became restless in fear. She said anxiously to Laksmana,"O my god, your brother is in danger of life; go , go immediately to help and fetch him."
Laksmana was hesitant to leave Sita alone in the jungle ; But Sita insisted him to go with abusing words ; As he was compelled to go ,Laksmana marked a boundary line and warned Sita to stay within the boundary and never try to cross beyond it until he returned.
The rest of the story is well known to all Indians. as :"Sapto-Kando-Ramayana !"
.....As soon as Laksman left ,Ravana in disguise of monk came to beg from Sita. He stood purposely beyond the boundary line ;As Sita stepped outside the boundary to offer alms ,Ravana dragged and kidnapped her to captivate in Sri Lanka, his own kingdom.
Story of Ramayana is ancient ; but This character of 'Marich'. still continues to reign in every country ,in every age with different names, even up to this century.
Political diplomats and spy are armed in Machiavellian policy ;they aptly bring secrets from the land of enemy in disguise to disclose or to disseminate as required.
....another special character whose name was 'Bivision' who supplied the secrets to the enemy how to kill 'Kumva-karna' and 'Jarasondho' who were too powerful to be defeated.
The mythological stories have such enigmatic power that they never die. They come back with changed colour .All the modern stories of alien or star-trek /shreck are only metamorphosis of mythological stories.
