Sipra's Diary : Poem > Beauty of Alaska .

Title :  BEAUTY  Of ALASKA   Sipra Roy

W175/   Lines33

I lost my heart in the beauty of Alaska.

The native Americans named it  Aly-Eska

Which meant for them ‘great land’!

I wonder to think how visionary

Were the ancestors by their  instinct

To imagine such a potential name in the mind!

Eon after eon the yellow metal remained

Hidden under the rocky glaciers

Unknown to the universe;

But alas! as the river Yukon

Carried some yellow-nugget in her bosom

Attracted crazy gold-bees in the land to flock upon .

Some of them earned  fortune,

while the most were buried under avalanche

In  quest of scary gold rush  as martyrs,

Without leaving any trace for us to search

To view White Pass and river Yukon

We, the eager tourists boarded on

The narrow excursion railroad

Under which the nature laid

Frozen sepulture of thousand deads

Who came once from the far land to venture

The way by paving rail-road in this pristine land.

The sigh-of that tragic part of history

Offered by the crew guide to the amateure tourists

Who were sharing and relishing with snacks and coffee!

The history of gold and greed shocked me.

With awe and  aching heart, viewed  I

Nature’s cruelty behind such celestial beauty!
