Sipra's Diary : story of "Maya"(File)

                                                Maya     by   Sipra Roy.

I feel great joy to work with  volunteering  team  for food packaging in different  occasions; sometimes for festivals , sometimes  for victims of natural calamities  Once  I saw a lady volunteer with  her  name tag "Maya" while Was working in a food-packaging team .Then I asked her "Excuse me, are you Indian? The lady nodded  her head and reply "I'm Spanish." I said ,"sorry! I thought you to be  Indian by your  name;  Do you know what is the meaning of Maya in Spanish?"

-"No, Maya is my given name by my  'guru'!"

I was sure this Guru  must be some Indian!"

Guru-business with the  product of 'yoga',  'power yoga' 'kundalini yoga' dipped in the solution of spirituality is flourishing everywhere, specially  in America. I went "Sivananda   religious retreat" in Nyaardam of south India which  may be named as  novel spiritual entrepreneurship . There I met some young. engineers , lawyer ,priests, musicians (Tabolchi which means artist playing with Tabla, an   instrument for  rhythm). They joined the Ashrama  as  volunteers ;  through  conversation  I came to know that their dream is somehow to come USA. If they give free service  in this institute for  six months they might be sent to  Sivanando Institute situated in  Bahama, US. The easiest way to fulfill  the  dream  to get entry  in US for the ordinary  ambitious young, is to be enlisted  somehow in  some reputed spiritual institution of India; so I mentioned these retreats as spiritual entrepreneurship .

After one hour at the recess period the Spanish lady came to me. and asked smilingly, I 'll love to know the meaning  of my name which is given to me by Guru .

Though I know very well  about the theory of Maya as a student of Philosophy ,  but I am pathetically  poor  to reproduce  my knowledge in simple language  to be understandable to  some  foreigner .

Any way, I briefly answered, ' literally  Maya  means  illusion : that which is not true. But from the standpoint of  Non-dualistic Hindu Religion the term "Maya"is of great importance  with subtle meaning and multiple views ( of confusions!).

Maya is the powerful force that creates cosmic illusions that the phenomenal world is real ;  it conceals the true character of spiritual Reality.. ..It is the projection or appearance of the phenomenal world .

...it is neither real nor unreal :

for me it is so enigmatic!  personally I think the ancient spiritual scientists faced a deadlock to prove Non-dualistic theory; then they  couldn't manage  how to meet the two ends tie up.  So  to solve it by introducing  a   more dubious term 'Maya', which is similar to swallow a stinky rodent by a snake who neither can vomit nor can swallow ! So to me, Maya still keep us  trapped  in the mystery of maya.

It is easier for me to tell some story on Maya, heard from my mother.  They are funny as well as easy to realize the magic wand of Maya;  as "example is more powerful than precept" and to grasp the concept.

#Story of Maya:

......Once lord Brahma was curious to experience temporarily for 2/3 months   about the much dubious mystery of Maya . He himself  incarnated as a husband in a pig's family. But 3months was over ,Brahma didn't return. When he didn't return throughout the year ,the dieties in heaven became worried . They all went to Lord Shiva who was absorbed in meditation.  The deities began to pray and wait patiently .Nobody dared to interrupt Him.After 3 months Lord Shiva opened his eyes and saw the anxious  deities. He heard the story calmly and remained silent .Lord Indra. said,"If you permit me I can rescue  and bring back him in heaven which is in great chaos for this long absence."Indra exhibit his own weapon to prove his immense power!

Shiva took some ashes from his  earthen pot  of 'ganja'. and handed it to Narayana.

"If Brahma refuses  your  prayer to come back, then just throw this ash to him. He will get back his senses and responsibility!"

Then Narayana  accompanied by Narada and others came down to

earth  in search of Brahma, the creator of this universe. The dieties found Brahma  wallowing  in a muddy pond with his pig family. He seemed to be in his pinnacle of bliss.

He exclaimed joyfully to see all  the devatas  standing around the pond

'what a pleasant surprise to see you all here !"

Devatas with folded hands prayed :  We have to come here to take you back with us .It is more than one year you left  heaven which is in state of utter chaos . Please be ready to go back with us ."

Brahma looked sad.All his joys evaporated. With broken voice He appealed,

"How can I do that ? How can I leave my beloved wife and these cute babies?"

Brahma with full of  muds  in dirty body and so his wife and piglets began to grunt cheerfully around  Bramha.

All  the devatas were so  shocked and ashamed that they remained down headed and tongue tied.

Narada whispered  Narayana to remind of Shiva's . As  Narayana threw the   devine  ashes to Brahma , Brahhma  immediately became aware of his own  real self. The illusion of" Maya" dispersed away .

#Another fun story  about Maya :

Once Narada asked Lord Krishna ," O Krishna can you explain me what is Maya.  Why earthly people  love to stick and spin around it in spite of lots of sufferings?!"

Krishna," Sure ! it is most surprising and intriguing story of life.

But before I start, please bring a glass of water.  I am thirsty.

Narada went briskly near a pond where he met a beautiful young lady. who was carrying two big pitchers full of water .Narada felt pity for the girl. It was hot summer.

Narada: "  May I help you? So Narada carried the big pitchers to her cottage; The girl lived with her father. Father was so happy with this

kind young man that he proposed him to marry her daughter.

Both were enchanted with each other. Narada  accepted  the proposal.

After marrying they. began to live happily. They birthed three children in 12 years .Then one day a catastrophic storm accompanied by  heavy rain was sweeping over the village. Narada tried hard to save his children  and wife. Due to torrential flood  Narada lost his house along with loving  family in  the raging flood and storm. All were swept away  but somehow he was saved unconscious.

Out of traumatic grief and loss he became conscious  and remembered that he left  lord Krishna  waiting with thirst . He came to the same place where Krishna was still standing under the tree . Narada handed over the glass of water. with much apology,

"  Sorry, I am little late for ....

Interrupting   him Krishna said ,"Is it little late ?... It is twelve years that I am waiting !"

Narada noticed a naughty  and mysterious smile playing on the face  of Krishna who commented  humorously, "hope, it is clear to you now  what is meant by "Maya!"

Sipra's Diary : COMMENTARY-on the Poem ."WHY"!... .W=459.//. L=49

Commentary     (On Poem: WHY! ) W=459/ page

Autobiography or Memoir is written on the basis of one’s ability to collect memories, as one needs to retain or mark the past events and images.

We passed through variety of experiences and covering the whole gamut of emotions in life: Joys and sorrows, love and hate, loss and gain.

I take part in several memoir classes of seniors.  We share our stories with one another in memoir classes. The focus of most seniors highlight the negative side of life: Such as disease(like cancer),death of beloved near and dear one, neglected and tortured childhood, painful delivery of baby or loss of baby, unhappy marriage ending in divorce, victim of rape, racism, survival of holocaust and so on. These are really hard part of life which is too painful to forget. But isn’t life something more?

Why fun, humor, at least  experience of occasional stupidity that are experienced in everyday life are so rare to  share  with  the readers to make  them laugh? Bright side of life  remain often shadowed in most memoirs.

Chirle Chaplin once said,” A day without laughter is a day wasted; laughter is the tonic, a relief from pain. “

Really, life is a tragedy when seen in close up, but become comedy in long shot; So better to view life not through microscope, but telescope. Memoir is a kind of psychotherapy. Sad moments loose the edginess through catharsis; it becomes metamorphosis in the process of long gap of time !

In my perception literature is turning to be feminine in gender; female contribution in poetry, fiction, children’s book, and specially cook books and  memoirs  is greater/ larger than that of  the  counter gender. From the latest trend it seems to me that library and bookstores will be flooded with cook-books and memoirs(of the female), except  academic books for the schools and colleges

Is it the future of our literature?

It is global pride for the greater participation of women due to the development of  girls’  education..  But there should be balance in every field.‘Law of diminishing returns’ in Economics is not desirable in literature at all.

Then what causes this imbalance or discrepancy?

Is it that interest of male is declining   in literatureOr, piles of cookbooks and personal memoirs are occupying/ (invading!) the intellectual field? In the battle of quality Vs quantity, the quantitative progress should be controlled; so that it does not   supercede  Quality.

It doesn’t indicate the uprising of literature

Under the mercy and blessing of internet, number of writers are  growing  more than that of  readers. In this age of Podcast, Instagram,  spotify etc.  people have neither time nor interest  to read lengthy pieces .

Literature is same as  the Garden of Eden; Whom to pray to save it from being occupied by weeds and parasites?  To Athena or  to Minerva? or Saraswati  or to surrender  at the alter of AI  or ChatGpt?

                                                End

Sipra's Diary: Poem Title : WHY! (Ranjini). Aging)L=29//W173

                        Why!

Why aging turns us like plants of autumn,

With slightest sentimental touch cause

To shed fragments of memory as dry leaves;

Either piled on, or blown by wind to ditches

To convey only message of loss and sorrows!

If variety is the spice of life

Why not the memoir of elders to be?

Where did fly the glory of the past, story of romance?

Are they gone with the wind in some arid desert,

To leave warm sigh and to release hidden tear,

To vaporize through strainer of memoir!

In spite of highlighting the sad, bitter  part,

To add some flavor, can it be served as dessert

With sprinkle of  humor and laughter ?

I remember my cute  young niece

Once fell down from a swing and  hit her head

She got up with tearful eyes but pretended

Not to cry and to say,"see me Mom,

I got  hurt from falling yet I’m not crying !'

Perhaps so little yet so strong and great lesson

The psycho-somatic difference on the plane of aging!

Sipra's diary :Otherside.......April. The Bengali Newyear, 2022. +. [. New additionApril 2023]

Yesterday I spent long hours. for wishing Happy Bengali Newyear ( NOBOBORSO) to my relatives and

some old connections who have connected me through   FACEBOOK.  Thanks. to  Facebook  : for such a  social connectivity.

I was thinking. A river truly represents the  life . ...A river has two sides; the bank of one side  thinks with heavy sigh  that all joys and fun are owned by the other side of bank ; the other side of bank also thinks   the same.........I forget the title of that poem......

Friends and relatives were cheering  about my   glorious stay in New York while I was roaming back-steps, not remembering so much of celebrating New year in India  but the sad memory of  last period of my mother's painful days in hospital bed  from April 7th  to June 4th,1987.   It is 36years!!

                                      ( April 14 ,2023 )

It is so sad and different  'Nobobarsho' from  the last year!

My second brother, Bimalendu Mazumdar  passed away on the day of Bengali New year..... From now on all future new year will bring brother's  memories. He was not only good and great as my brother  but  respected and loved by  each and all who came in his contact.

He had  extra-ordinary bright career both  as student and career as mining  engineer, in WBC.  After retirement  he was   busy in consultancy  Farm. We became close to each other during our stay in  Mumbai : Cherishing those days that bring back childhood  love and affection  for the second time.  Every  Friday he used to spend  with me and  my daughter, his beloved niece,  in  Mumbai  apartment ,.......

He left behind  bereaved  wife  and two daughters.

Sipra's Diary : Poem for. Print( FLO--April bimonthly): "BLoom"w177//L- 24for Fl-contest on Julyw182//L38

                 TiTLE:   Bloom.

Can you infer how far is boom from bloom ?

There are only 'm'& 'n'two stops to reach 'L'!

Only two steps  forward may cause a doom!

Both 'Boom' or 'Bloom' burst forth in their own  way

One sparks smoke  and fire, the other

Spreads its message by fragrance in the air .

Presence  of "L' adds  love and beauty;

So 'bloom' is welcomed  by everybody !

If essence of  love is blended  with  'boom'

What fun will play the metal weapon?

Imagine! with each pressure on trigger

Boquet  of flowers will shower in place of bullet

Daffodil ,cherry blossom, tulip or blue bonnet!

Imagine! the battlefield will turn to a bed of petals,

Instead of stained corpses or wounded mortal  fatals!

Will the team of Romeo Julliet be seen in the evening

Crowding  out of grave for delayed honeymoon ?

Who can initiate the  marriage of boom with bloom ?

.Hmm.....Only  the poets  can  think  such absurd......

As 'poetic license'  allows to defy the real world,

And  feed on  abundant  freedom  of fantasy !!

                              Wow!

Urmila's. letter: Poem: Confusion with humanity. (Renamed the title " PUTN" )

                Confusion with Humanity.

"Where  to put PUTIN  ?"

Asked the rebel leader of Ukraine;

Shouted the enraged mass, "Burry him under the deepest mine!"

"If  he  explodes  like dynamite to destroy our dwelling!

For   human  he is a real  object of  contempt and danger .'"

Then, "Let him throw to the fire of volcano to turn

Into grey ashes !" "That  may  cause again air pollution!

Besides,  settling  down of   ashes  on   the  ground

Is  also  poison for the  living   world   around;"

"The best solution is to drown him under  the ocean";

'Alas!  he may suck the ocean with wholesome  aqua being !'.

"Lots of problems  hover  with him on earth , ocean and heaven;

Let us search internet and consult   specialists  for  suggestion!"

The uprooted mob shouted ,"we want tooth for tooth , thorn for thorn

This is  the  eternal norm";

'That's totally wrong !"( thunder roars ):  in  pitch of baritone

Suddenly  the blue sky was shrouded with black cloud and a message

with lightening appeared ;""Extract and crush the "ISM"from Putin;

Who will detect how many  future Putins are larking to spread wings!

Can the alchemy of '-ISM' be changed  into a   heart  of  global love ?

Then only  a   new  sun  of  peace-loving  world   can emerge ,

To  erase  all  enmity  and  spread  all-embracing universal fraternity!

Sipra's Diary:( Prompt#) "Single on Feb15" (. Print)poem. Broken Heart,

  Single on February 15?

How   blessed  are you!  Grand opportunity to  wait for next Feb 14 and   by then   to  sit flower to flower to collect   nectar of joy like butterfly  and  breathe  free until next year  with the thought that you are not captured tricked  by any emotional trap. !.
If you feel neglected and overlooked, then go to a bar  and drink until you are lost in blissful mental state.
You came out as single on Feb 15......... as winner or looser?

If you are not sad for spending Single on February 15', then surely you are a winner in the gambling of love-game ! So celebrate with those who are also like you ;  Celebrate   the day  jointly, marked :

as " bravo! non valentiners" -   with  three cheers. along with  beer!

'Singles' are like blank cheque for receiving  universal invitation from many other  eager  single-hearts, with  potential  flowery path  of future.
If you are single on Valentine's  Day, your credit card / debit card remain  pristine . ...hmm  ...let the gift shops, gourmet dishes of restaurant,  liquor  from  bar, bouquet of flowers sigh and cry and shower plethora of curses on you :

              "Damn the  Single  buggar!"

Lastly,  for consolation  mysterious  "hope" is still there in Pandora's box!
Yes,  hope.......either  flashing  or  flickering ......

Broken Heart

Starting from the youth to the end of life,

All thirsty hearts wait to be pierced

With some sugarcoated arrow in the heart .

Life  has no charm without romance;

It is better to be wounded and ooze,

Rather than a barren  life  to chose.

Oozing heart caused by failure love

Inscribes in blood long-lasting

love - lyric  and melodious music

That lingers long to  inspire  sensitive spirit.

An arrow piercing the the red heart

Symbolize the vibrant juvenile love

But random display of  Valentines' cards

Makes the image funny, naive and ridiculous!

But how heart can be broken ?

Is it of glass,  metal, or plastic?

It is a lump: soft and sensitive .

Is the 'broken heart' an utter literary fallacy?

Or a metaphor of intense emotion,

Popularly known as  depression.!

******************************************************                                                             Bio:    Sipra Roy, born & brought up in India ; Came in New York couple of  years ago.

The theme of the poem focuses on the show-off or the plight of 'True' love: which is  gasping  under the piles of displaying cards;  it   prompted me to compose this poem .
